Over 80 000 visitors from all over KZN flocked to the Durban Exhibition Centre for the 38th year of the East Coast Radio House & Garden Show, which took place from 29 June and 8 July, to gain inspiration for their living spaces and to celebrate Durban.
Centred on the theme, “Home is Where the Heart is”, visitors got a lot more than they bargained for with a record 500 exhibitors showcasing timeless trends combined with comfort and functionality, meet-and-greets with local celebrities, mouth-watering flavours in a Foodie Fair that had doubled in size and plenty of fun activities for the kids.
Among the celebrity guests that took part in this year’s show were Miss South Africa Tamaryn Greene, Miss South Africa World Thulisa Keyi, DJ Zinhle, 7de Laan actors’ Hennie Jacobs, Mimi Mahlasela and Hildegardt Whites, renowned landscaper and TV personality Tanya Visser, celebrity chef Sherwyn Weaich, Margaret and Allan Hirsch, as well as East Coast Radio’s vibrant DJ’s Damon Beard, Jane Linley-Thomas, Bongani and Mags, Danny Guselli, Lubz, Deon Govender and Sirshin Moodliar.
The introduction of new features had a tremendous response with the public as social media engagement using the feature-specific hashtags were frequently used throughout the show; these included #DiscoverDurbanDesign showcasing the creative community of talented local individuals and trends, and #DurbanHasMore in the Discover Durban Cuisine Kitchen, in partnership with Durban Tourism, which celebrated Durban’s cultural, traditional, and contemporary food with developing and renowned chefs.
Other interesting features that received overwhelming positive feedback were The Edit by Olly Polly, a focus on décor for kids’ spaces, a live demonstration of a 10-metre-long street art mural by Giffy Duminy, Mook Lion and the Creative Yeti, interactive demonstrations at the Builder’s DIY Pavilion, Lip Synching Battles with the East Coast Radio team, Geekville and the Durban Gaming Expo – a first for KZN that kept gaming enthusiasts and comic fans enthralled for three days, the popular Home Grown Design Fair, and the KZN Travel & Adventure Show, a Pop-Up feature celebrating life in partnership with Tourism KZN.
Apart from the wide range of exclusive show deals on offer, some lucky visitors won amazing prizes including 80 square metres of European Sisal valued at R50 000 from Coirtex, a set of Tefal pots to the value of R25 000, a Wonderbag prize, an amazing hamper from the Durban and Coast SPCA, and a copy of Chef Sherwyn Weaich’s latest cookbook.
